The Vampire Diaries Recap: Season 5, Episode 10 — Damon and Elena Break Up?!

Aaron, Stefan, and Damon in The Vampire Diaries Season 5, Episode 10: “Fifty Shades of Grayson”

Is Katherine’s time up, or will the survivor rise again? At the end of The Vampire Diaries Season 5 midseason finale (“Fifty Shades of Grayson”), Katherine Pierce seemingly suffered a heart attack — and while we know she’ll survive long enough to be the center of attention in the 100th episode, her days are pretty much numbered.
It seems like an odd choice for TVD to kill off Katherine. She’s been the saving grace of Season 5, her redemption arc was only just beginning, and her connection to Stefan was one of the most magnetic storylines The Vampire Diaries has produced since Klaroline (OK, so maybe I really like redemption arcs). And let’s be real: I’d much rather have Katherine come to terms with her demons and move on and not try to deflect them like another vampire we know — [cough, cough] Damon.
However, playing two characters is probably exhausting for Nina Dobrev, who once again gave two stunning performances — as Katherine painstakingly seeks redemption from Stefan, Elena becomes Dr. Wes’ new test subject, Subject 83182.
Through Dr. Wes, Elena learns that her father was one of Augustine’s head scientists, which meant he experimented on vampires regularly. He also was the one who taught Dr. Wes — or, Dr. Creepy Ken Doll — everything he knows. However, Augustine isn’t in the business of torturing vampire for sick pleasure. In fact, Grayson Gilbert used his research on vampires to help people. He wanted to use vampire blood to cure cancer and other types of diseases; he wanted to save people.
